Oh, the Places You'll Go!
~Dr Seuss
I've found my love for travel and then discovered I needed to go gluten free. Whether you are new to gluten free living or seasoned, traveling and gluten free living are not the best of friends in our current world (at these the majority of the USA).
Luckily, things are improving and things like the Find Me Gluten Free app plus other online communities can connect us to more options.
I'd love to share with you some spots I've found thru my travels. So my hope is I can share with you a few times a year on some great places to check out.
Boise, ID
I was lucky enough to travel with my husband on a business trip he took to Boise. First, everyone there was so friendly. Those in the midwest like to say how everyone is so nice but these folks I ran into at coffee shops, stores, and around took it to a higher level of nice. Just saying!
The Stil - This is a fun ice cream shop which offers gluten free, vegan, and/or regular options. Plus they have even infused some flavors with a little adult beverage! Their menu changes so I'll just shared that I loved all the flavors I tried. Yes, I did make multiple visits because vacation calories do not count! But do not worry, you can ask for samples if you have a hard time deciding.
Boise Fry Co - When in Boise one must eat fries, right? They offer several locations and what I loved was all the sauces were gluten free. But actually everything was available gluten free because they offered both types of buns or you could go with no bun. We ate here with my brother in law as well so with three of us we did order a variety of fries to try more. Surprisingly, the sweet potato fries with the maple marshmallow sauce was pretty dang good! I'd go back for those!
Guru Donuts - Please beware they are not 100% gluten free shop. I use to love a good donut so finding a shop that offers gluten free options I've got to pop in to try one. Here again looks like their menu options rotate with seasons. However I do know I tried the Homer donut. Was a light donut and just the right size for me. Sometimes they can be to think or dense but these worked well for me. And of course, yummy!
Meriwether Cider - By now you are thinking I've hit up all the healthy spots. Here again we didn't have a bad cider. All were great. I think my favorite was the Blackberry Boom. Since we were there in November they also had a mulled cider which was extra yummy! They have two locations so stop in and try some!
Tip
We thought we would drive to Oregon to say we'd been there. Well we head off in our rental car with Florida license plates. Then driving around Ontario, OR to find a sign to get a picture by. Turns out there is a traffic light in town which only allows about one car thru at a time. I recall it being yellow as I went thru and where we come from that's very normal.
As we headed out of town a wonderful Oregon State Police Officer pulled us over. We quickly found out we had those Florida plates on the car, I had a Nebraska drivers license, and pot is sold legally in Oregon. So we were throwing all the red flags! However the officer was very nice & understanding. We actually had a great chat with him. I drove away with a warning & souvenir Oregon State Police wristbands. Plus the wonderful story to tell for years!
