Hair Breakage Hacks

Like the Walmart checkout line past 8pm or restaurants that only serve Pepsi products 😉, hair breakage is just one of those unfortunate things that most of us will deal with at some point. And once a strand splits, it’s game over.

Listen, there are some products that can provide a temporary fix for split ends, masking more than anything, but split ends can’t actually be repaired…just cut off.

Which is why prevention is your very best bet!

Fear not, I’ve got some important tips that will combat the split ends but I can’t do anything about the Walmart checkout line!

  1. Don’t overbrush. Turns out that whole ‘brush your hair with 100 strokes thing' is a real old wives tale. Overbrushing causes a lot of breakage! Only brush when necessary.

  2. Sleep in a braid or a soft scrunchie. With all the advice to skip heat on your hair, it’s tempting to go to bed with wet hair but guess what? Sleeping on wet hair is more responsible for breakage than anything else. It’s true! That’s because hair is super fragile when it’s wet; it becomes more elastic and prone to breakage. Ideally, hair should be dry and braided before we get under the covers. Extra credit for sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase. Both are gentler on hair than regular pillow cases because the fibers are smoother and won’t rough up your cuticle as you toss and turn.

  3. Dry your hair with a t-shirt Your best bet to keep your hair safe when it’s wet is to blot it dry with an old t-shirt, rather than using a rough terry cloth towel on already fragile, wet hair.

  4. Try a hair mask treatment 1-2 times per week. This deep conditioning treatment is infused with antioxidant-rich oils to provide extra nourishment and strength for dry damaged hair. Two of my favorites are Sunkissed Coconut Hair Mask or Apple Silk Hair Mask.
