Mindfulness Exercises

When I first heard about mindfulness exercises I was like…. “Oh, no thank you, my mind is full to capacity already!”

Alright, that might not be exactly what happened but, can you blame me for confusing mindfulness with mind fullness?

I digress.

The term mindfulness really just means a ‘heightened psychological state of awareness’. Here’s what’s crazy…researchers have found numerous benefits to incorporating mindfulness into your daily routine! Some mindfulness benefits include: reduced depressive symptoms, less stress, improved memory, improved focus, less emotional reactivity (in other words, you are less snappy), increased satisfaction with your relationships, and increased happiness.

I could go for some of that!

This month, I’ve put together a list of some of the best mindfulness exercises for those who are trying to find their inner zen and don’t know where to start. Pssst, the first step is getting away from the kids, husband, wife, clutter, electronics, etc for a few minutes!

Yes, read that last sentence again!  It can be done and your health depends on it.

Stress is largest impactor of our health yet very few will tell you that.

Are you ready to relax?

Set a morning intention by journaling. Write down your intention or mantra for the day along with what you feel gratitude for.  Don't stress this can be done in as little as 5 minutes!

Take a mindful shower. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, inhaling positivity and exhaling negativity. Allow yourself to take time to feel the water and appreciate its power to clean.                                          Bonus:  Benefits of Flowing Water:
                            Anxiety relief.
                            Stress relief.
                            Increased concentration.
                            Better sleep quality
Bet you didn't realize your shower had that much power!

Open a window, whether it is in the car, next to your office desk, or at home near your favorite chair. Close your eyes and feel the breeze on your face, notice the smells and sounds from outside.
Bonus:  Better yet, sit outside amongst the trees for 30 minutes.  Even try barefoot whether on grass or concrete (just not on concrete on really hot days, for safety)

Relax with a color page, taking time to eliminate any distractions and focus on the colors and patterns.

Take a mindful walk. Instead of letting your thoughts wander, take care to focus on one thing at a time, like the wind on your face or the sound of the leaves crunching under your feet.
Bonus:  walking amongst nature for 30 minutes is holistically the best exercise you can get.
