Is it right for you?

The side hustle is having a moment.

And I think, with really good reason. If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s the importance of being prepared and let’s be honest, it definitely opened our eyes to working remotely and all the different ways we can make money from home!

I started my side hustle when I was working full time, Casey's business was growing, and I wasn't wanting more on my plate. I wanted a solution to my long time dry skin plus I was needing new powder foundation and of course the essential lip balm. Keep in mind my only experience with direct sales was buying from friends. I hadn't Hosted an event or even shopped with Lemongrass Spa before I enrolled.

So how do you start your own side hustle?

You make the decision to begin.

You can make excuses all day — too busy, have no friends, too many kids at home, not enough cash to start — but remember that almost half of the United States has some kind of side hustle and they’ve got struggles too!

Think you want to try it out?

Or perhaps you've tried in the past & it didn't turn out like you'd hoped?

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you’re deciding what exactly to choose!

How big is your opportunity?

One of the most important deciding factors when evaluating a business is market size. Do your research. It’s important to figure out how many potential customers you might have. If you’re starting a makeup business, you need to guesstimate how many people in your current network might be interested. That’s your potential warm market and a great place to start! From there, think beyond your warm market. Is this an opportunity that would appeal to a wide variety of people or just a very specific niche of people that might be difficult for you to target.

Do customers want your product?

You might be sure the world is ready for anti-aging breakfast cereal, and you’re ready to to go all in. Hang on a second. Before doing anything, do a little research. Poll your family and friends and see what they think! Is it something they would buy? Are they excited about it? Have they heard of it?

Can you make money?

Obviously, this is the single most important question. If you’ve answered the first two questions in the affirmative, now it’s time to think of your profit. This concept intimidates a lot of people, but it can be very simple: revenues minus expenses.

Revenues: This is how much you realistically think you can sell each month. If you’ve estimated your warm market size and polled demand, you have enough information to estimate this. Just remember that your sales should grow over time, as people learn about you and your product!  And if it's a consumable product, customers will reorder.

Expenses: Fixed expenses are what you have to pay no matter how much you sell, like monthly website costs, catalogs/brochures, etc. Variable expenses are what it costs you every time you make a sale. For example, gas if you are holding in person events?

When you subtract your expenses from your revenue, are you making money?

Keep in mind that most start-ups don’t make money in the early days, when you’re building up your customer base and covering your initial start-up costs. If that’s the case, estimate how long it will take you to build it back up and break even. If you think you can make your investment back over the course of 5 months, it’s a pretty safe risk to assume!

A blessing of online growth opportunities the expenses can be very minimal if you choose that route which can help you get the cash up front then add in additional expenses as you continue to grow.
