Natural Sunscreen Options

Holistically, continual exposure to sun is ideal.  Gradually increasing exposure day by day.  We need the vitamin D our skin makes from the sunlight for the health of our skin as well as the rest of the body.  It is essential for good immune functioning of the skin itself.  I'll even share later in this post how the foods we eat can assist in sun protection as well.

However when that staggered exposure is not possible, what we put on our skin daily matters!  Sunscreen can be one of the most toxic products we can apply.  Read thru what to look out for and then I shared my recommendations for natural alternatives to sunscreen.  There might even be benefits in your products not rated as SPF, keep reading for more on that.

Remember that sunblock or natural sun protection sits on top of the skin to create a barrier.  Think of the white Zinc Oxide noses of years gone by.  Where as sunscreen is absorbed into the skin to create a chemical reaction to absorb the harmful rays.  Continual use could cause further damage.

Natural Sunscreen Options for the face:

These offer a natural sunblock {aka physical barrier}, equivalent to spf 15-20.

Liquid Foundation

I tested out the Liquid Foundation out in Cancun, May 2019.

Picture on the left was about 8am before breakfast, I was wearing the liquid foundation.
Next picture is about Noon which is after spending time in a steam room, hot tub, a body treatment, and a golf cart ride back & forth between the Spa & resort.

I’m impressed how well it held up. Figured in the steam room that it was all sliding right off.
It also had wonderful sun protection! My nose got a little red one day but no sunburn!

Super impressed with how well it held up in the tropical weather of Mexico, temps in the upper 80s & lots of humidity.

Mineral Foundation

Give your face a youthful glow and satin softness with breathable, non-clogging mineral foundation.

  • Creamy, light shade for neutral and cool skin tones
  • Buildable matte finish
  • Natural minerals are talc free, chemical free, non-nanoparticle and dye free
  • Offers sunblock of 15-20 SPF

2023 update:

I love the foundations especially in the summer to give me sun protection in place of greasy sunscreens. Above I shared one of my long lasting liquid foundation stories. And now one for the mineral foundation, I wore some thru whitewater rafting, tips primer & setting spray so it stays. Bonus tip, I'm a very light packer so in place of setting spray I used Prebiotic Facial Mist on this trip. However most the facial mists are great substitutes! If you haven't tried yet, give it a try as the foundations are very lightweight & breathable.

Feel free to zoom in, I'm far left back row.

Before you shop at the store tip!

If you are otherwise healthy, chances are you do not need to spend the extra for a higher rated SPF.
  • SPF 15 sunscreen filters out 93 percent of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent
  • SPF 50 filters out 98 percent.
This leaves anywhere from 2 to 7 percent of solar UVB reaching your skin.

Natural Sunscreen Options for the body:

A few may be able to find locally at Target, Walgreens, etc. Otherwise they are easily available online and I provided links. https://www.rawelementsusa.com/?rfsn=5586184.59a853

Testing out the spray formula in 2023.

First time trying RAW ELEMENTS USA and it’s a win!! 😎
The spray sunscreen was pretty much scentless. I sprayed on and then blended for full coverage. Even after floating in the ocean for a bit too long it still protected me! {Not recommended of course 😉}
Pink shimmer lip balm added a nice, light tint & shimmer to the lips which is good for evenings too 👗
Now I did bring along my Raw Love Sunscreen lip balm as well from last year. It’s very hydrating and my lips need that after hours outside.

I tested out these two in 2022. Really like the lip balm! Don't mind the sunscreen at all. As the instructions say a little goes a long way. If you turn white you used to much, lol. Used it in Mexico and Jamaica as well as the middle of America. One day in Jamaica I did get red but I'm pretty sure that was because I didn't reapply and was in the water to long ;)
